Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF – Nikon Mount

This review is my opinion.  I am a professional photographer, but as always, your views may differ from mine.

This lens was introduced by Tamron in February 2008 so there are a few lenses, with the Nikon mount, in this category that have come out after it.  Two that come to mind are the Nikon VRII and the Sigma OS.  That being said, this lens is fantastic.  It is extremely sharp, even wide open, although like most zoom lenses, sharpens up even more after f4.

When I purchased this lens, it was sharper than the Sigma non-OS and as sharp, in my opinion, to the 80-200 Nikon and 70-200 VR 1.  I have not had the time to try the Nikon VR II or the Sigma OS versions at this point.

Pros: Very sharp, inexpensive for a pro quality lens with a 2.8 aperture, lighter than the Nikon and Sigma versions, very solid build

Cons: No VR/VC, slightly louder and slower to focus than the HSM motors in the Nikon and Sigma.

My conclusion:  This is one of, if not my favorite, lens.  The quality of the images are amazing, even when using entry or mid level bodies, such as the D5000.  If you absolutely need some sort of vibration control or reduction, then maybe this lens isn’t for you, but with a monopod, tripod or steady hands you will not regret owning this lens.  I personally don’t have extremely steady hands, yet I still find this lens to be great in every way.  That being said, I do look forward to a VR/VC version when they release it.  This is only due to a very small percentage of shots, such as a dimly lit room during a weddings or events I’ve shot at.  For the cost, you can’t go wrong.

Here in Canada Tamron is distributed through Amplis.  You can see their site at http://www.amplis.com/ or directly to the Tamron lenses through http://www.tamron.ca/

Unfortunatly, at the moment of writing this blog, the only large retailer that sells Tamron in Ontario and has it listed on the web site is Henry’s.  I know Vistek also sells Tamron, but I could not locate this item on their website.  I find this odd, especially after the information from Nikon Rumors yesterday that Tamron has actually outsold Nikon lenses in Japan.

Price, at the time of writing this blog, at Henry’s is $899.9

For comparison:

  1. NIKON AF-S 70-200 F2.8 VR II LENS at Henry’s is $2,399.99
  2. NIKON AF-S 70-200 F2.8 VR II Lens at Vistek is $2,249.
  3. Sigma AF 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM at Henry’s is $1,599.99
  4. Sigma AF 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM at Vistek is $1,519.00
  5. Sigma Non OS at Henry’s is $1,299.99
  6. Sigma Non OS at Vistek is $1,199.

I apologize to any resellers that I’ve missed, please message me and I will edit this post with more information.

About covesphotography

I have loved photography since I was a child. I always had a camera with me, although it was usually an old Kodak 110 Instamatic. When I was older, I used to take (with permission) my fathers Konica SLR with a 50mm Sigma lens. I was always disappointed that I had to wait for the film to be developed to see what it looked like. I have about two large containers full of pictures in my bedroom closet even now, mostly mine from that time. I don't know exactly how old I was, but I was able to take a picture of a sunset over Lake Superior with a heavy cloud cover above and the water below, the sun just broke through. My parents took it and blew it up to a very large image and I had it hanging on my wall for years. As a lot of teenagers are now, I was impatient and didn't stay with my love of photography, however when digital became more popular, and because I double exposed an important roll of film, I purchased my first digital camera, about 2004. I loved it so much that it went everywhere with me. Now I want to turn that passion for photography to something that can bring joyful moments to other people. From elegant weddings, to family portraits, from infants and pregnancy photos to corporate head shots, from pets to product photography. I travel to you, either to your home or a location you specify. If needed I can help in location scouting as well.
